SCHEDULE A VISIT TO ULUPŌ NUI
- Interested in bringing your class on a field trip?
- Searching for a place to host a professional development experience for your faculty and staff?
- Seeking a site to do a service-learning project or fulfill community service hours for your scholarship?
- Looking for an opportunity to mālama ʻāina, reconnect with your homeland, and give back to your community?
Come to Ulupō Nui and participate in our unique, Kailua-specific Hawaiian culture- and ʻāina-based activities in one of the most storied and significant places on Oʻahu. We welcome learners of all ages from pre-kindergarten to post-secondary, from keiki to kūpuna. Please contact Program Director for Ulupō Nui, Kaleomanuiwa Wong at kaleomanuiwa@gmail.com to schedule a visit and learn more about ideal group size, preferred adult to child ratio, suggested site fee donation, and required liability waivers.
What to Expect
Our learning visits usually run from 8:30 am to 12:00 pm and include welcoming protocol and an opening circle, walking tour with moʻolelo (story) stations, and a huli-ka-lima-i-lalo (“turn you hands down to the land”) service-learning project. This is our normal outline, but we are open to tailoring the experience to your specific group’s needs upon request. Groups may also stay to eat their own lunch after the visit if they wish.
What to Wear/Bring
- clothes for working outside (that you are okay to get dirty) and clothes to change into at the end of the visit (just in case)
- towel or pareu in case you get wet
- sturdy shoes for dry-land action and reef tabis or rubber boots for working in the loʻi (wetland kalo patches)
- water bottle (we will have water jugs to refill you bottles)
- bug repellant and sunscreen
Waivers
All participants in our activities at Ulupō Nui are required to complete liability waiver forms. We will send you these forms once you have scheduled your visit.
