Last month, Kaleo Wong felled a sizable African tulip on the Kawainui fringe of Kūkanono, and members of the Kailua Hawaiian Civic Club helped to haul it away. Last week, Kaleo took down a nearby monkeypod, and a few days later, the students of Trinity Christian helped him carry it off. Tree-trimmer estimates for removing the major invasives along the ma kai border of Ulupō have come in at about $80,000, Although Kaleo has yet to tackle those monsters, the big-buck nature of his kua lā‘au efforts is clearly evident in the lower reaches of Kūkanono. And yet – except for the cost of tools and their maintenance – the bill for us, so far, has been a huge nothing. Thus do we topple more than invasive trees and hill-of-dollar economies: E iho ano o luna, e pii ana o lalo, e hui nā moku, e kū ana ka paid. -- Kihei de Silva
